Blog     Measuring guide for carpet and floorcoverings

It’s helpful to have your room sizes with you when looking to purchase a new carpet or floorcovering. This enables you to plan your budget and select the best carpet or floorcovering you can afford.

Below is a simple guide to help with your initial estimation. However, it is recommended to have your room measured by a professional before placing your order.
At Martin Phillips Carpets we offer a Free expert Measuring Service.

How to measure:
  • Room: Square or Rectangular rooms are straightforward, simply measure the length and width of the room at its maximum points. Don’t forget to measure into doorways and alcoves. Draw out a plan to help the sales staff give you the best advice.

  • Hall: Measuring the Hall is similar to a room, but you should also indicate where the doors are and the stairs on your drawing.

  • Stairs: Measure the stair width, count the number of stairs and measure the tread and riser.

  • Landing: Measure the length and width of the landing, draw out a detailed plan and don’t forget to measure over the top step of your stairs. You should also indicate where the stairs and doors are on your drawing.
